Elementary Presidents' and
Principals' Exchange

The Elementary Presidents' and Principals' Exchange offered the opportunity for elementary PTA presidents and principals to share ideas of how they are helping fit the pieces together for children. Mary Conner, SMAC Elementary Coordinator facilitated the exchange of ideas. Some of their many awesome and innovative program ideas are listed.

Service Projects

Brookridge
All school activity done in one day for Children's Mercy Hospital
Westwood View
Invited senior citizens in community to attend holiday program; parents volunteered to pick them up
East Antioch
Just Say No Club folded clothes for Project Warmth
Brookwood
They have a Students in Action group with representatives from each class and in the past there has been no coordination. This year PTA worked with students.

Family pancake breakfast at $1 per person, Party pictures were taken

Free family nights
Mill Creek
Family Read Night (January 28 at 6:30 p.m.) for whole family Through Drug Free Club sponsoring an evening for parents only featuring 6 speakers including Paul Morrison (February 18)
Trailwood
"A Taste of Trailwood" Family Fun Night:

Families brought a food dish and recipe; a tasting party was held; recipes were compiled and there was entertainment

Dad's Chili Cook-off

Family science night
Corinth
Students raising money for Wildwood sell desserts at PTA family nights (raising money for Wildwood is not PTA sponsored)
Oak Park
Jesse Rollwagen (O.P. Police Department) spoke to parents about gangs while the students had an evening Cultural Arts program
Somerset
Holiday Shop: started out as a service; involves families to make items that they donate; lets students with very little money buy gifts for family members; has been so successful that it has raised funds which wasn't the intent;
items are priced very inexpensively
Belinder
Fall Festival: lot of different events going on

Simple but Spectacular

Trailwood: Contacted 40 school bakers to each bake 3 dozen cookies and then had a cookie exchange for teachers without them having to bake the cookies; served cookies and cider while the teachers selected their cookies

Pawnee
Grandparent's Day (November); student musicians volunteered to play during lunch; posters were made "Now Performing ____________"
Brookridge
"Gary Day" (Gary is the custodian): Set up lounge chair and TV in cafeteria where Gary sat during the lunch hour; brought a tray of Gary's favorite lunch (from Burger King) ; hung a poster proclaiming "Gary Day"; Gary spent the lunch period relaxing while PTA volunteers cleaned the trays
Somerset
PTA/Wildwood idea; Wildwood parents provided a meal (chili, dessert, etc.) for principal, teachers and others that went to Wildwood on day of their return to take home to their families
Overland Park
Classes having 100% PTA membership were given a tailgate party
Nall Hills
Citizenship and Reflections winners came to a PTA meeting to read their entries; Increased attendance at meeting
Bluejacket-Flint
An asterisk was put by the names of PTA members who joined by September 20
Benninghoven
Invited community leaders to a Citizenship Reception
Belinder
During lunch Teacher Appreciation Committee has students write notes to teacher and they compile the notes in a book for the teacher
Westwood View
Teachers put books in basket that they would like for their classroom and parents view the books and purchase for the classroom

Writing - SEAT (Student Experts At Trailwood) after school club (for 4th-6th grade students) Students choose topic; have note taking class, go to library, research subject, write about subject, present completed project, get a certificate stating that they are a "Student Expert" and can then go to other classrooms and give a presentation about the project

PTA helps with probability exercise
Merriam
Mathletics night: Parents do math
Santa Fe Trail
PTA publishes literary magazine "Inklings" every student has a piece included and receives a copy of the magazine
Briarwood
For reading goal; Parents come into classroom and read orally
MillCreek
Students submit writings for newsletter
Corinth
PTA keeps a parent data base for talents, skills, etc.

How do you transition 
6th to 7th and preschool 
to Kindergarten?

For 5th and 6th: 15 speakers in 3 sessions and students choose which speaker to attend
