National PTA Influences 11 States'
Parent Involvement Policies
To date, 11 US states have included
requirements for parent involvement, based on National PTA's National
Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs, in their state education
policies. These states are Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Kansas,
Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Rhode Island.
National PTA has published its six National Standards for Parent/Family
Involvement Programs with the intention that school systems everywhere can
use these standards as a reference point for setting policies that would
involve parents in their children's education. The National Standards
address:
-
Communicating: regular, two-way,
meaningful communication between the home and the school.
-
Parenting: promoting and supporting
good parenting skills.
-
Student Learning: encouraging parents
to aid in their child's learning process.
-
Volunteering: welcoming parents' in the
school, and encouraging their support and assistance.
-
School Decision Making and Advocacy:
making parent full partners in the decisions that affect their
children and families.
-
Collaborating with the Community: using
community resources to strengthen schools, families, and student
learning.
